D-Day 80

Driffield Remembers
The 6th June 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed. In 1944 Operation Overlord saw around 4,000 ships and landing craft set down about 132,500 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation.
To mark this special occassion, Driffield Town Council have arranged the events shown below, starting with a
👉08.00 – Proclamation read by our Town Crier, Brian Fairfield by the Town Clock on Market Place
👉21.00 – Beacon Lighting ceremony accompanied by a bugler, standard bearers and a piper in the All Saints Church yard. The Tribute will be read by a member of the Guides and Scouts.
On Saturday 8 June, the Driffield Branch of the Royal British Legion have arranged a ceremonial service at the Driffield Garden of Remembrance at 10.45.
We would like to extend our thanks to the Driffield Branch of the Royal British Legion and the Driffield Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club for the excellent window display they have provided for the town to enjoy in our office window at 2-4 Market Walk, and in the window of No.43 Market Place.
